WHAT IS THE SCHOOL-BASED MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELLING SERVICE?
SCHOOL-BASED MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELLORS PROVIDE SERVICES TO CHILDREN AND YOUTH IN SELECT ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOLS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES THAT ARE AFFECTING THEIR ABILITY TO FUNCTION IN THE SCHOOL SETTING. THE CHILDREN AND YOUTH REFERRED MAY HAVE PREVIOUS MENTAL HEALTH DIAGNOSIS, OR MAY BE EXPERIENCING DIFFICULTIES COPING WITH THEIR THOUGHTS, EMOTIONS, AND BEHAVIORS.
THE FOCUS IS TO HELP THE CHILD OR YOUTH AND FAMILY INCREASE THEIR:
UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS
SENSE OF CONNECTION AND BELONGING AT SCHOOL
EMOTION REGULATION /COPING SKILLS
SOCIAL AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS
ABILITY TO MANAGE THEIR BEHAVIOR
PROBLEM SOLVING CAPACITY
UNDERSTANDING AND PRACTICE OF MINDFULNESS AND RELAXATION
ANXIETY MANAGEMENT

How to access this service?
Referrals are generated by the school-based teams and come directly from the Administration or School Counsellors. High school students must be aware of the referral and consent to the School-Based Mental Health Counsellors services before they begin. Elementary School service begins following parental consent to their child’s involvement with our services.
High school mental health services are provided at Rutland Secondary School, Kelowna Secondary School and Mount Boucherie Secondary School.
Elementary school mental health services are provided at South Rutland Elementary and Raymer Elementary Schools.
HOW LONG DOES THE SCHOOL-BASED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICE WORK WITH CHILDREN AND YOUTH?
Counselling is provided in the school setting and session frequency and duration is based on the individual needs of the children and youth. Services can be moderate in duration and intensity, but may also include longer-term service for children and youth who require more support.
