A Message from the CEO: Embracing an Inclusive Holiday Season
Dear Community,
As we mindfully approach the holiday season, I want to take a moment to share some of the recent reflections from our Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee and an important decision we have made at arc programs. For the second year in a row, we will be refraining from any traditional Christmas decorations in our public-facing areas. Instead, we will be celebrating this season with a playful and light winter wonderland theme.
Because we are an agency committed to decolonizing our ways, and accomplices to communities that have been experiencing systemic barriers, this is one action we can take to avoid perpetuating any symbols and messages that maintain the status quo. Although it is a small gesture in comparison to hundreds of years of injustice, this approach to the season invites the community for a cultural change.
Why This Change?
We are proud and grateful for the fact that our community is a rich tapestry of diverse beliefs, cultures, and traditions. By choosing a winter wonderland theme, we aim to create a space where everyone feels included and respected, regardless of their personal holiday celebrations. This decision aligns with our values of inclusivity, justice, kindness, and collaboration. We strive to ensure that our public spaces reflect our commitment to anti-oppressive practices and our dedication to fostering equity and belonging for all.
An inclusive environment encourages more people to engage with our community spaces and participate in our activities. We believe that everyone should feel welcome and valued in our shared spaces. Creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere contributes to the mental and emotional well-being of all community members. We want our spaces to be safe and inviting for everyone.
Winter Wonderland Elements
To create a delightful winter wonderland, our public facing areas will incorporate elements such as snowflakes, twinkle lights, friendly snowmen, winter scenes and icons such as pinecones, fires and snowy landscapes.
Our Commitment
At arc programs, we are dedicated to transforming our public spaces to reflect our commitment to inclusivity and equity. This includes:
- Ensuring that our spaces are accessible and welcoming to people of all abilities and backgrounds.
- Incorporating elements that celebrate the traditional territories in which we have the opportunity to work on, as well as the diverse cultures, identities, and experiences of our community members.
We understand that holiday celebrations are significant for many, but this is not the case for all staff, clients, and community members we serve. Even if it affects just one person, we believe it is important to pay attention and not perpetuate feelings of exclusion. By choosing to be inclusive, respectful, and safe for all walks of life, we are upholding our commitment to equity and belonging.
lowercase movement and Two-Eyed Seeing Approach
This heartfelt announcement also directly connects to arc programs’ support for the lowercase movement, which rejects symbols of hierarchy wherever they are found. By renouncing the uppercase letters in our name, we aim to make the statement that who we are is directly connected to fostering spaces of belonging. Additionally, all our services are deeply guided by the two-eyed seeing approach, incorporating the strengths of both western and Indigenous knowledge to create a more inclusive and respectful community.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we collectively learn and grow.

Candice Henriques
